Greg Rutherford’s fiancée Susie Verrill has revealed the family are going through a tough time amid a number of struggles, following the Dancing On Ice star’s horror accident.

The former Olympian, 37, was forced to withdraw from the competition’s final last month – which saw Ryan Thomas crowned champion and dedicate his win to Greg – on the morning of the spectacle after he suffered an injury in rehearsals.

He later revealed how gruesome it truly was, detailing the accident and sharing the scars he’s been left with, after saying he ‘effectively gave [himself] a C-section’ while attempting to leap through the legs of two pro ice-skaters during his routine.

And while he has been recovering after surgery, the family has now been struck down with illness and some sad news about their pet.

Alongside a picture of Greg and their daughter sleeping, Susie wrote: ‘Both of these two are poorly still – @gregjrutherford went to the docs & turns out he has whooping cough. Daph apparently doesn’t but is still under the weather.’

She then added a second image to Instagram, showing their three childrenwith their beloved pet, who they’re preparing to say goodbye to.

Susie wrote: ‘and then we’ve had a really sad time with our lovely Gus 🙁

‘We were called by the vets to say goodbye to him a couple of days ago because it turns out he has a tumour in his intestine & lymph nodes, not spleen as we first thought.

‘We prepared ourselves for lots of cuddles and to leave him there, but he made it very, very clear he wanted to come home.

‘So he’s back with us; eating every treat going and still wanting to go on walks.

‘We’re taking it hour by hour and just enjoying the time we have left with him.

‘It’s awful but we’re grateful we’re getting these moments to show him how much we love him.’

She later added: ‘And in cheerier news, I had my nails done earlier this week & they’re cute. Trying to zone in on the happy stuff as much as we can.’

Greg, who shares Milo, eight, Rex, five, and Daphne, two, with Susie, also reportedly said on Instagram: ‘We’re having a s*** time as a family at the moment so I’m cooking through it. Thanks for all your well wishes.’

This comes after Greg shared an update on his recovery and showed pictures of his ‘healing’ wound.

He wrote: ‘A little stomach update… I’m almost 4 weeks post op now and feeling so much better. I can move around with almost no feeling of pain and the wound has now closed and healed. Pic 2 shows the insane swelling I initially had 🤣.’

Greg said that he is working on ‘tensing his abs’ and even teased returning to the ice, saying: ‘I can’t tense my abs properly still, but that’s coming. I also managed to put a ton of weight on since the op, so as soon as I’m ready I’ll be training to get myself trim again… maybe even back on skates 👀.’

Over on his Instagram stories, he added: ‘I’m back on Insta and thought I’d gross everyone out – but it is a positive update.’

Dancing On Ice is available to watch on ITVX.
