Hollywood legend mistaken for Johnny Vegas on BBC show

Viewers believed the resemblance between Russell Crowe and Johnny Vegas was uncanny (Picture: BBC)

The One Show viewers were convinced that Hollywood actor Russell Crowe was Johnny Vegas during an appearance on the BBC show.

The Gladiator actor, 60, discussed his upcoming tour with act Indoor Garden party which includes dates across Italy and an intimate set at Glastonbury Festival.

However, viewers of the show, which also featured Jimmy Carr as a guest, were distracted by Russell’s new look which they compared to beloved British comedian Johnny, 53.

On X, @cumston_gary wrote: ‘#theoneshow. Russel Crowe, or Johnny Vegas?

Echoing their sentiment, @dumptyhumpty18 remarked: ‘Vegas has turned up instead #TheOneShow.’

@VeeeJon99 added: ‘Love Jimmy Carr. Love Johnny Vegas. Top guests on tonight’s #TheOneShow.’

Others, including @bshep58, also said that Russell bore a likeness to fellow acting icon John Goodman.

Russell and Johnny are pals, with the Les Mis actor previously introducing the comic as an ‘old mate’ when he pledged to help the vulnerable during the coronavirus pandemic on a social media video.

Johnny later delivered on their promise and dropped off food supplies to people who needed assistance in St Helens in Merseyside in 2020.

Russell responded by tweeting the message from Johnny earlier on Tuesday, joking that people should ‘expect to lose every second or third biscuit’ from their deliveries.

Given their friendship, hopefully Johnny will look on the comparison favourably as he previously seethed after his TV show was likened to Jeremy Clarkson’s.

The TV show Carry on Glamping follows Johnny as he tries to make a profitable business in the luxury camping market. Although his venture is the subject of a TV show, he insists it’s completely genuine but doesn’t believe can be said of Clarkson’s Farm.

‘This isn’t just for a TV show; this is 100 percent an actual business,’ he insisted.

‘It really [annoys] me off when people say, “Ooh, it’s like Clarkson’s Farm”, because his show is a set-up, and you can see that from a mile off,’ Johnny said while speaking to Radio Times magazine.

‘That [comparison] really insults me – my team and I were doing 17-hour days to get the place ready, because it’s a real campsite with real customers, and we couldn’t let them down.’

The One Show airs weekdays at 7pm on BBC One and iPlayer.
