Kylie Minogue’s music has been soundtracking her fans’ lives for over 30 years, whether it’s nights out dancing to Padam Padam or romantic moments to All the Lovers.
But when it comes to her own personal life, Kylie has had her fair share of ups and downs.
For the Australian pop icon, 57, this has involved a slew of high-profile relationships.
Now, however, she’s happy being on her own, having declared that she’s revelling in the ‘freedom’ that being a single woman brings.
In her new Netflix documentary, simply titled Kylie because, well, she needs no other description, the Spinning Around hitmaker reflects on her romances, including the one that no other could ever live up to.
Who has Kylie Minogue dated?
Jason Donovan – 1986 to 1989
Kylie famously dated Jason Donovan, now 57, from the mid to late 80s, as anyone with even a sliver of pop culture knowledge will know all too well.
They got together when playing on-screen lovebirds Scott Robinson and Charlene Mitchell in Aussie soap opera Neighbours, with the characters marrying in a wedding that was broadcast in 1987 to almost 20million viewers.
Off-screen, Kylie and Jason also collaborated, their timeless tune Especially For You topping the UK charts in 1988.
Sadly, their relationship didn’t go the distance, with both their careers and Kylie’s heart being captured by another man, leading to its demise.
Kylie moved on with INXS frontman Michael Hutchence, whom she first met at an INXS gig that she attended with Jason.
Jason has also admitted that his own ‘jealousy’ contributed to things ending.
Speaking on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories about being ‘truly’ in love with Kylie, he shared: ‘I knew I was in love with her when she became successful on her own. It was a jealousy thing.
‘I could see her slipping away. I am sure it happened before, but it was not until I could see her going off in one direction – I thought I was going to lose her.’
He added that they lived together ‘for a while’ and said there was ‘a lot of chemistry between [them]’.
‘This was the first time I had truly been in love with someone,’ he declared. ‘That is a very powerful emotion to have, coupled with the fact that you are one of the most successful and talked about couples in Australia, which was our backyard at the time. We argued a lot about her wanting to go off and do other things.’
In 2016, he also confessed to The Mirror that the parting of ways was ‘extremely painful’ and took him ‘years’ to recover from.
Thankfully, Kylie and Jason have remained on good terms and are still friends, with Kylie reminiscing on their ‘amazing times’ in a previous Instagram post for Jason’s birthday.
Jason, who is now married to Angela Malloch, even appears in his ex’s new documentary, in which he reveals he was aware of how fond Hutchence was of Kylie.
‘I could tell he was focused on her… I could sniff that a mile away.’
Michael Hutchence – 1989 to 1991
Kylie has denied that there was any crossover between her relationship with Jason and her romance with rock star Hutchence.
At the time, the performer said he had ‘corrupted’ Kylie’s ‘good girl’ image.
While they separated after two years together after touring schedules put strain on things, they stayed close, leaving Kylie heartbroken when Hutchence died by suicide at age 37 in 1997.
In her new three-parter, Kylie is asked whether the late Hutchence was the love of her life. She replies: ‘Yes, probably. I’ve had lots of relationships, some were love, some were not.
‘My relationship with him, or our relationship at the time, was not for that long, but it had a profound effect on me.’
Kylie attended her ex-boyfriend’s funeral in Sydney, telling cameras in her documentary that ‘he was the first in so many ways’.
‘And of those firsts was heartbreak. I was devastated,’ she says. ‘He was a rock star, which doesn’t just mean that he needs to have many women in his life, but he needed to go where he needed to go.’
She also shares that, from conversations with people in his circle, she knows that Hutchence ‘talked of [her] and thought of [her]’, even when they weren’t together.
The singer fled to Paris to ‘escape [her] feelings’ of grief following his death, having become overwhelmed by sorrow.
To this day, she says she feels that he is ‘with [her]’.
Stéphane Sednaoui – 1996 to 1998
Kylie dated French music video director and producer Stéphane Sednaoui in the late 90s. He had worked with major stars such as Madonna and Bjork.
While together, Stéphane, 63, directed Kylie in the video for Towa Tei’s GBI (German Bold Italic), which she featured on.
They were pretty private, with much of the split also kept out of the public eye.
James Gooding – 2000 to 2003
Kylie and model James Gooding dated in the early 2000s – but the breakup was bitter.
Initially, a statement said that they had ‘decided to concentrate on their friendship’.
However, he later blasted her as ‘self-obsessed’, ‘virtually friendless’, and a ‘control freak’, while she scolded his inability to ‘live without sniffing a line of cocaine or drinking heavily’.
Olivier Martinez – 2003 to 2007
In her longest relationship thus far, Kylie dated French actor Olivier Martinez, 60, for four years. He was known for starring in films like S.W.A.T and Unfaithful.
Their paths first crossed at the Grammys, when Kylie presented an award to Justin Timberlake, and Oliver was with her in 2005 when she went through early- stage breast cancer treatment. Her career was put on hold when she required chemotherapy and a lumpectomy.
Although they broke up, Kylie and Olivier were spotted together as friends in 2017.
Andres Velencoso – 2008 to 2015
Next came Andres Velencoso, a Spanish model with whom she had one of her longest-running romances.
They met while filming a fragrance ad, but their hectic schedules were their downfall.
Kylie was ‘very sad’ after the split, she told Australian radio, adding: ‘It was an amicable separation; I still love Andres. He’s the nicest guy; he’s the coolest guy.’
Joshua Sasse – 2015 to 2017
In 2016, after a year of dating, Kylie got engaged to British actor Joshua Sasse, who was 19 years her junior and whom she met on set of TV show Galavant.
Their engagement bliss was short-lived, though, with Kylie confirming the separation via Instagram, writing to fans: ‘Thank you for all your love and support throughout this recent chapter of my life.
‘Thank you now for your love and understanding with the news that Josh and I have decided to go our separate ways.
‘We wish only the best for each other as we venture towards new horizons.’
Paul Solomons – 2018 to 2023
Kylie’s most recent relationship was with Paul Solomons, who was the creative director of GQ.
They got together one year after her split from Joshua, with Kylie announcing the relationship on her 50th birthday.
Again, packed schedules tore them apart, not helped by Kylie spending much of her time Down Under and Paul living in London.
A source claimed they ‘tried to make it work’, but ‘the time difference was a killer.’

In short, no one.
Asked in her documentary if she’s happy, she responds: ‘I’m super happy, yeah.’
She also told the Sunday Times’ Style magazine ahead of its release: ‘I don’t have a boyfriend. I was in a relationship, and when that ended, I realised I was OK on my own.
‘I’m getting pickier. Narcissists… I’ve dated one, and I’m grateful I now have that knowledge. That’s my red-hot “no”.’
Still, she’s never been able to find a love that replicates the spark she felt with Hutchence.
Growing tearful, she confesses that she’s spent years searching, and yet: ‘I haven’t got it.’
Kylie is streaming on Netflix from May 20.
