A woman has been charged with fatally stabbing her infant daughter in Gage Park after allegedly arguing with the child’s father about waking up her other children.
Tatiana Maxwell, 25, faces murder charges in connection to the Friday morning incident that left her less than one-month-old daughter, Nyhnia Stovall, dead, Chicago police announced Sunday.
Maxwell was allegedly arguing with Nyhnia’s father about waking up her other two sons when he ran out of their apartment in the 3000 block of West 59th Street, according to a police report obtained by the Sun-Times.
According to the report, which quoted the father, the dad allegedly told a neighbor that Maxwell was going through postpartum depression and was “going to kill the newborn.”
The neighbor later told police that the father said the mother had been listening to “satanic music,” according to the report.
Nyhnia’s dad tried to go back inside but the door was locked, according to the report. He kicked the door in and found Maxwell lying on the floor next to Nyhnia, who had a stab wound to her chest, according to the report.
When police and ambulances showed up, Maxwell allegedly jumped from a second-story window, injuring herself, police said.
She was taken into police custody and treated at the University of Chicago Medical Center, and the child was pronounced dead at Comer Children’s Hospital, according to police. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services was notified, the police report said.
