Jamie-Lynn Sigler Opens Up About Years of Secrecy After MS Diagnosis

Jamie-Lynn Sigler

More than a decade after going public with her multiple sclerosis diagnosis, Jamie-Lynn Sigler is opening up in a deeply personal way — and reflecting on the years she spent keeping her condition hidden.

In a candid interview with Us Weekly, published Wednesday, April 22, Sigler admitted her biggest regret wasn’t the diagnosis itself, but the time she lost by staying silent.

“What struck me the most was the outpouring of support from the MS community,” she shared. “I realized, ‘Oh, I have robbed myself of this tribe, of these people who see me. And I’m not alone anymore.’”

The actress, best known for her role on “The Sopranos,” revealed that she kept her diagnosis private for 14 years after being diagnosed in her early 20s.

She Hid Her Symptoms for Years

During that time, she worked tirelessly to hide symptoms like a limp, pain and incontinence — all while navigating personal challenges, including the breakdown of her first marriage.

“I was always acting. I had no idea what authenticity felt like. Everything was a lie and for show. I didn’t even know who I was,” she explained. “All these secrets had piled up, and I was suffocating. I was constantly in fight or flight and survival mode.”

When she finally went public in 2016, shortly after her wedding, the shift was immediate.

“I’m done apologizing for having MS,” she said — a statement that marked a turning point in how she viewed herself and her future.

Now, with a new book on the way, Sigler said she feels ready to share her story more fully.

“I felt ready. I’d never wanted to write a book,” she admitted. “I’ve finally let go of the pressure to be what I think people want me to be.”

She Thanks Christina Applegate for Shifting Her Perspective

Part of that journey has included confronting the shame she once carried.

She credited fellow actress Christina Applegate for helping shift her perspective, recalling a candid moment: “I give Christina all the credit for being like, ‘Yeah, we have to wear diapers sometimes.’ … There’s still such shame about it.”

Sigler also described a pivotal moment with a hypnotist that helped her recognize how deeply her insecurities ran.

“I didn’t realize how much shame I had around having MS. It was like this scarlet letter that said I was bad or tainted,” she said, adding that it forced her to rethink how she moved through the world — and how much energy she spent trying to appear “normal.”

Only the Late James Gandolfini Knew About Her Condition

For years, only one person on set knew her truth: her late “Sopranos” co-star James Gandolfini.

“Having somebody there who knew was a game-changer,” she shared. “Sometimes… he would pull me aside and be like, ‘How’s the MS? Tell me what’s going on.’ But never at work and never in front of anybody.”

Today, Sigler is embracing a new chapter defined by honesty, family and self-acceptance.

Living with MS hasn’t been easy, but she now sees it as something that reshaped her perspective in meaningful ways.

“It stopped me in my tracks,” she said, “and was like a mirror… ‘The lies you’ve been telling yourself about who you are aren’t true.’”
