Jimmy Kimmel Provides Hopeful Health Update as His Brave Son Billy Turns 9 

Jimmy Kimmel is marking a meaningful milestone for his son Billy — and reflecting on the journey that got them there.

On Tuesday, April 21, the late-night host took to Instagram to celebrate Billy’s 9th birthday with a message that blended gratitude, pride and a look back at the challenges his family has faced since Billy’s birth.

Kimmel’s Sweet Birthday Post for His Big Day

“Our boy Billy turns 9 today and is doing great, thanks to the doctors, nurses, therapists, and many more at @ChildrensLA & @CedarsSinai,” Kimmel wrote alongside a photo of Billy smiling and holding a fish he caught. “CHLA trains medical staff to save kids all over the world. The post quickly filled with birthday wishes from friends and fans alike.

Familiar names chimed in, including Viola Davis, who wrote, “Happiest of birthdays!! You are blessed,” while Kimmel’s longtime collaborator Guillermo Rodriguez added, “Happy birthday Billy. We love you very much.”

Actor Johnny Knoxville joked, “Happy birthday Billy!!!! too bad jackass is ending as he could have been the new me!!”

Henry Winkler added, “What a day ! What a fish.”

Fans also reflected on how far Billy has come.

Kimmel Has Bravely Opened Up About Billy’s Health

Billy, the youngest child Kimmel shares with wife Molly McNearney, was born in 2017 with congenital heart disease.

Just days after his birth, he underwent open-heart surgery — a moment Kimmel later described publicly in a deeply emotional segment that resonated with viewers nationwide, according to People.

At the time, Kimmel balanced humor with heartbreak, joking, “Poor kid. Not only did he get a bad heart, he got my face,” while also expressing profound gratitude for the medical team that stepped in to save his son’s life.

Over the years, Billy has undergone multiple procedures, including a third heart surgery in May 2024 which Kimmel shared to Instagram. 

Billy Has Had Numerous Surgeries

Following that operation, Kimmel shared an update that echoed both relief and perspective.

“We went into this experience with a lot of optimism and nearly as much fear and came out with a new valve inside a happy, healthy kid,” he wrote.

He also took time to acknowledge the people behind Billy’s care, highlighting the compassion and expertise of the medical staff who supported their family through each step.

Reflecting on time spent in the hospital, Kimmel noted how humbling it was to witness other families navigating similar challenges, adding that many are not as fortunate.

Now, as Billy approaches double digits, the focus is on celebrating the present.
