Jonathan Bailey’s heartbreaking love story on Channel 4 has never been more urgent

In Jonathan Bailey and Matt Bomer’s heart-wrenching drama, Fellow Travelers, the pair put on the performance of a lifetime – literally.

The eight-episode romance first came out in 2023 and, from the get-go, felt quietly revolutionary. A generation-spanning tale led by two out gay actors, Bomer and Bailey, who have managed to carve successful Hollywood careers for themselves despite the odds.

Amid their high-profile projects like White Collar and Bridgerton, Fellow Travelers sits as a hidden gem in their repertoire.

A firm favourite for those who have seen it and an untapped treasure for those who haven’t.

Equal parts political thriller and forbidden romance, the series is set in the heart of Washington in the 1950s at the height of McCarthyism. Here, two political staffers, Hawk (Bomer) and Tim (Bailey), cross paths.

The show deftly unpicks the oppressive political regime gripping America in the second half og the 20th century, a time during which gay men and lesbians were actively being hunted and targeted by the government (known as the Lavender Scare).

Our protagonists in turmoil, Bomer and Bailey deliver stunning turns fuelled by their electric chemistry (taken full advantage of in several steamy scenes) and layered portrayal of just how desperately trapped so many gay men and women were during this era.

Where Hawk plasters on an immovable facade in order to further his career and conform to a world that threatens his existence, Tim acts as his foil, soft and sensitive. Everything he’s ever wanted is within touching distance, yet impossible to grasp.

The show moves through the decades as the political landscape shifts and evolves and regresses and twists – as do the lives of our star-crossed lovers, arriving in the 1980s at the peak of the AIDS crisis.

You’ll come for the compelling plot, but you’ll stay for Bomer and Bailey, who pour all they have into these roles. The whole show is a bitter pill to swallow, witnessing all the ways bigotry destroys the only life we get to live.

And its political warnings feel more relevant than ever during an era when hard-fought-for rights are under threat once more. This kind of TV is vital for much more than just entertainment; it holds a mirror to the modern day.

Of course, in between all the heartache, there are also pockets of joy that soften the blow.

It’s a manifesto on the human condition, the desperate fear and the reckless hope of it all. And most of all, about regret.

As Fellow Travelers arrives on Channel 4, I hope it is introduced to a whole new audience this side of the pond.
