Mecca Reveals the Truth About ‘Married at First Sight’ Season 20 Weddings

<p id=”par-2_26″>During a recent appearance on the <a href=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tb7Kva4jLfY”><em>Reality Alert</em></a><em> </em>podcast, Mecca addressed rumors that this season’s cast did not officially tie the knot during their televised nuptials. </p>

<p id=”par-3_16″>“I have a question. So after the wedding, were you legally married?” host Max Gieser asked. </p>

<p id=”par-4_15″>“Was I legally married? No. No,” Mecca replied. “That was left to us to decide.” </p>

<p id=”par-5_27″>Mecca, who was matched with BelleJolie Force on the show, explained that the couples were given paperwork from King County that was “under our discretion” to sign. </p>

<p id=”par-6_8″>“So the show is a lie,” Geiser deadpanned. </p>

<p id=”par-7_21″>“In our case … it’s [up to us] whether or not we want to make that legal on paper,” Mecca explained. </p>

<p id=”par-8_27″>Noah Samton, SVP of current production for Bravo and Peacock unscripted, previously hinted in an interview with <a href=”https://variety.com/2026/tv/news/married-at-first-sight-season-20-peacock-changes-1236842709/” target=”_blank” rel=”noreferrer noopener”>Variety</a> that the season 20 couples didn’t officially get hitched. </p>

<p id=”par-9_61″>“I would say that their experience is that <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/news/married-at-first-sight-producer-hints-season-20-marriages-not-legally-binding.html/”>they are a married couple</a>, and they are living their lives as a married couple, and every aspect of what they experience on that is a marriage,” he said. “They have a wedding at the beginning, and then they have a divorce if they want to go their separate ways at the end.”</p>

<p id=”par-10_24″>That’s a huge change from previous seasons of the show, when all the couples were in real marriages from the start of the process. </p>

<p id=”par-11_43″>Why producers decided to change the format of the show, which moved to Peacock from Lifetime starting with season 19, isn’t clear. But the shift seems to have paid off. <a href=”https://www.cheatsheet.com/news/mafs-season-20-ratings-smash-some-fans-let-down-poor-casting-manufactured-drama.html/”>Viewership of season 20 was up</a> significantly from season 19, according to reports. </p>

And according to online records, it seems that couple likely didn’t legally wed until after filming ending. Marriage records in King County, where Seattle is located, show that no one else from this season ever filed that paperwork to make their TV marriage official. </p>

<p id=”par-13_73″>Between the shift away from legal marriages and the fact that some cast members came into the experience with little interest in a committed relationship, it seems clear that <em>Married at First Sight </em>is headed in a different direction compared to earlier seasons. In his conversation with Gieser, Mecca confirmed that producers were likely thinking more about drama and less about creating lasting relationships when they picked people to be on the show. </p>

<p id=”par-14_24″>“You can kind of tell from the beginning that some of these guys are definitely not ready to get married, you know?” he said. </p>

<p id=”par-15_21″>He added that from a producer’s perspective, it made sense to cast people who might not be fully prepared for marriage. </p>
