Michael J. Fox Shares Parkinson’s Disease Journey
GettyFox has made the brave decision to speak publicly about his diagnosis and create awareness for Parkinsonâs disease. In February 2026, he spoke candidly to Time magazine, explaining why he made this decision. âI was motivated by what I heard from the science people who said that the science is ahead of the money,â he said. âThey said, âIf you can direct money toward the right research, we can speed things along.â And then I was touched and motivated by the patient community. They just needed someone to step in and push things along.âÂ
It took time before Fox was ready to discuss his diagnosis with the public, which he did in 1998. In his interview with Time, he spoke about the period between learning of his health and keeping it a secret, and why he decided to come forward.
âThe more I thought about it, the more I thought it was a privilege, and in a way, a gift,â he said. âItâs a gift that keeps on taking, but if I look at the positive side of itâ¦this is a role that I fell into, and I found myself uniquely qualified to fulfill. Now people say, âI have what Michael Fox has.â Parkinsonâs patients now have an identity, and they donât have shame.â
