Minions director explains Bonnie Blue ‘reference’ in new movie

Of all the places Bonnie Blue could unexpectedly pop up this week, a Minions film wasn’t particularly high on the list.

But that’s exactly what thousands of viewers became convinced had happened after a football-themed clip from Minions & Monsters appeared to feature one of the gibberish-speaking characters shouting the OnlyFans creator’s name.

Now, the film’s director has finally explained what audiences were actually hearing.

The bizarre theory centres on a World Cup-themed promotional clip for Minions & Monsters, which sees the little yellow chaos merchants taking on a team of movie monsters in a football match.

In one moment, a Minion appears to call for Dua Lipa or Sabrina Carpenter before viewers became convinced another Minion – Stuart – responds by shouting ‘Bonnie Blue’.

Given that the characters famously communicate in a language that’s roughly 40% gibberish, 30% random words, and 30% whatever sounds funny in the recording booth, it was an ambitious conclusion.

The theory nevertheless exploded across social media, prompting director Pierre Coffin to investigate whether he’d accidentally referenced one of Britain’s most talked-about internet personalities.

The answer, thankfully for every parent who has just spent £15 on cinema tickets, is no.

Speaking to The Movie Dweeb on TikTok, Coffin admitted he was completely baffled when people started claiming Bonnie Blue had made an appearance.

‘Apparently I’m saying this other person’s name,’ he said.

‘I’m bringing it up because I said, “Am I saying that?” So I went back to them because I didn’t know that person.’

After listening back to the original recordings, Coffin concluded the internet had simply… invented an entirely different sentence.

‘I didn’t say that at all,’ he explained.

The mystery noise, it turns out, wasn’t an adult content creator hiding in a children’s film. It was actually part of the surname of one of the movie’s animators, Omid Rajabalipour.

Specifically, Coffin says people have mistaken the ‘balipour’ part of the name for ‘Bonnie Blue’.

‘People hear that other person’s name, which is very strange,’ he added.

To be fair, hearing words that aren’t actually there is very much part of the Minions experience.

Coffin has voiced the little yellow creatures himself since they first appeared in Despicable Me, inventing their bizarre language – known as Minionese – by mixing together fragments of different languages, nonsense syllables, and whatever happened to sound amusing.

Which makes it all the more impressive that the internet managed to pull Bonnie Blue out of it.

The latest instalment, Minions & Monsters, is set in 1920s Hollywood and follows the Minions as they attempt to make their own monster movie.

The film also boasts a surprisingly starry cast, including Allison Janney, Christoph Waltz, Jeff Bridges, Jesse Eisenberg, Zoey Deutch, Bobby Moynihan, Phil LaMarr and Trey Parker.

It even features a voice appearance from Star Wars creator George Lucas, who previously revealed he’s a fan of the franchise.

But, at least for now, Bonnie Blue has not been involved.
