“Modern Family” star Jesse Tyler Ferguson has just opened up in a new interview about his family losing their dog, a 15-year-old Yorkshire Terrier named Leaf. While speaking to guest Jenna Dewan on the latest episode of Ferguson’s podcast, “Dinner’s On Me,” he revealed what he went through while having to put down his precious pet, and how his young son dealt with the loss.
“We had to say goodbye to our sweet little prince Leaf today,” Ferguson wrote in an Instagram post on February 9 that included pictures of the sweet Yorkie as well as the actor as his husband, Justin Mikita, cuddling with the beloved pet. “[H]e was the best little pup & has been with us since the very beginning â 15 incredible years together. Our first. ð ð¶ ð [W]e love you and will miss your licks, snuggles & barks, sweet guy.”
Ferguson’s Dog Leaf ‘Took a Turn’ Before Passing
During the Tuesday, March 31 installment of Ferguson’s podcast that had been recorded earlier, he “revealed that right before sitting down to film the podcast, he had to put Leaf down earlier in the day.”
While saying that it “wasn’t a surprise,” he noted âWe have thought this might be the case for a while. I’m leaving town [at] the end of the week to do a play in New York, and I was having such anxiety about being away when it might have to happen.”
âAnd, in the last few days, he took a turn, and I was like, well, the one bright lining is that I get to be here to say goodbye,” Ferguson added. “And I was really happy I could.”
Ferguson’s Son ‘Got Very Emotional’ Over the Loss
âThis morning, knowing that this afternoon we were going to put Leaf down, we told Beckett, our 5 and a half year old, because [â¦] he lost my mom when we lost my mom a little over a year ago, so he was able to process what it means when someone is no longer here.â
Ferguson and Mikita have been married since 2013, and share two children, Beckett Mercer (5 ½) and Sullivan “Sully” Louis (3).
âMy younger one, whoâs 3, doesnât really understand yet,” Ferguson added. “But you know, we told Beckett and he was able to say goodbye and he got very emotional.â
Although Ferguson admitted that he didn’t know if telling Beckett about Leaf’s passing was the right choice, he explained that when it comes to death, âbeing truthful is the only way to go.â
