Nancy Guthrie Update: Former FBI Agent Reveals What’s Likely Happening Behind the Scenes Four Months Later

The search for Nancy Guthrie continues. The beloved grandmother and Guthrie matriarch has been missing since February 1, when she was believed to have been abducted from her home in Tucson, Arizona. In the months that have followed, her heartbroken family has made several statements, urging the public for their help in identifying the person or persons behind the crime. 

Monday, June 1, marked four months since Nancy’s disappearance, and many who are invested in the case are concerned that there has been no major breakthrough. But is it time to give up hope? And what does this mean for the case from a legal perspective?

Former FBI special agent Jason Pack gave an interview to Parade about how this case is not a cold case. “Four months in, cases like this don’t go cold, they go quiet,” Pack said. “That’s a very different thing. Investigators are still working, still following threads, and frankly still waiting on someone to make a mistake or a decision to come clean.”

Pack also shared that investigators are continuing to work on the case and described how they would handle it, despite there being no major public announcements in recent weeks. 

“At four months, investigators are doing two things simultaneously. They’re going back to the beginning with fresh eyes, reexamining every piece of evidence, every interview, every tip that may have looked insignificant in the first weeks,” Pack shared. “And they’re watching. Watching finances, watching communications, watching behavior. Because four months is a long time to keep a secret, and people start to crack. They make calls they shouldn’t make, they spend money they can’t explain, they act nervous when there’s no reason to be nervous.” 

The Reward Money Could Create Pressure for the Kidnappers

The Guthrie family announced their decision to offer a $1 million reward for information leading to Nancy’s safe return. This is a significant amount of money, which would be appealing to those who know information about the case. “The $1 million reward is still on the table, and that kind of pressure doesn’t expire. It compounds,” Pack said. “Somebody knows something, and the weight of that is getting heavier every single day.”

The reward is still less than what was originally demanded in a ransom letter, which is believed to have been sent by the person or persons involved in Nancy’s disappearance. They requested $6 million in Bitcoin, and the family is believed to have chosen not to pay. 

Nancy is 84 and has complicated health issues, including requiring daily medication for blood pressure and having a pacemaker. Her family and members of the public are concerned about her well-being, but that does not mean the case could not have a positive outcome. Pack addressed why there should still be hope that the case is resolved. “Hope absolutely remains. I’ve worked cases that looked like dead ends right up until the moment they weren’t,” he said.
