Season 23 of âNCISâ really said âwhat if we emotionally wrecked the team every other week and then somehow made fans even more invested?â Yep, this season has been packed. With personal stakes, old ghosts, returning faces, and enough tension to keep online theorists fully booked.
Now, the finale episode, âSons and Daughters,â is almost here. And it seems like the show is setting up one last emotional punch before the team heads into hiatus.
According to a CBS press release, the official synopsis for the episode reads:
âOne year after a deadly coffee shop bombing, a new explosion proves the attack wasnât the work of a lone wolf â a case that forces the team to confront legacy and loyalty.â
And honestly? That wording alone feels loaded.
Between McGeeâs future, Parkerâs family drama, and Knightâs career evolution. Plus the lingering fallout from Vanceâs death earlier this season, thereâs a lot hanging in the balance heading into episode 20.
Season 23 Has Been Heavy on Family, Legacy, & Change
CBSFrom the beginning, season 23 leaned hard into emotional storytelling. Parkerâs revenge mission following his fatherâs murder kicked off the season with immediate chaos. And the Carla Marino (Rebecca De Mornay) storyline kept things tense for multiple episodes.
At the same time, the show balanced larger investigations with deeply personal arcs for the team.
McGee had one of the biggest emotional journeys this season. His past resurfacing in âIn Too Deepâ and growing conversations about leadership and the future of NCIS were vital. The season quietly positioned him as someone carrying more responsibility than ever before. Fans have definitely noticed that shift too.
Meanwhile, Parker spent much of the season confronting painful truths about his family. Especially involving his mother and his complicated relationship with his sister Harriet Parker (Nancy Travis). It seems like the show intentionally kept circling back to the idea of loyalty versus duty. Which now feels very connected to the finale synopsis.
Knight also had a major year after stepping into NCIS: Elite missions, including the dramatic Eleanor Bishop (Emily Wickersham) storyline in âHer.â Letâs be real, the show clearly trusts Knight with bigger responsibilities now. And fans are already speculating about what that could mean moving forward.
And then there was the team itself.
Season 23 repeatedly tested whether NCIS could survive major structural changes. The agency shutdown storyline in the milestone 500th episode, âAll Good Things,â pushed the characters into unfamiliar territory and forced them to work outside the system theyâve relied on for years. That episode especially felt like a turning point for the series.
Even with all the heavier material, though, the season still kept the classic âNCISâ energy intact. Weird cases, emotional banter, found-family dynamics, and those small character moments fans always latch onto.
âNCISâ Fans Have Had Some Wild Theories
CBS
CBSIf thereâs one thing the âNCISâ fandom knows how to do, itâs spiral respectfully.
Fans on Reddit have already been throwing out theories about what could happen in âSons and Daughters,â and some of them are honestly pretty intense.
One fan wrote, âSomething sketchy will go down that involves McGee’s son and ruins his chance to be director, either by disqualifying him or by making him feel obligated to spend more time with his kids.â
Another theory suggested, âMateo is either gonna turn out to be working with the bombers or he will be killed off or something abit more far fetched mcgee has to choose between his life or his family⦠maybe a cliffhanger where he his forched to make a choice..and we dont know the outcome till season 24.â
Others are focused on leadership shakeups.
âKnight gets Special Agent in Charge over Parker due to all his âcoloring outside the linesâ. Making things tense between the team..especially McGee and Parker,â one fan predicted.
Another fan added, âSeamus dever guest stars as laroche again, I think he’s gonna be the new director.â
There are also theories involving possible returns.
âGibbs will probably make an appearance at the end of the episode and probably McGee will become Director and Kayla Vance will join Team Parker,â one fan speculated.
Honestly, after this season? Nothing feels completely impossible.
What the Finale Preview Photos Already Confirm
CBS
CBSWhile CBS is keeping most of the finale details tightly under wraps, released photos from the episode have already confirmed a few important appearances.
McGeeâs newly revealed son Mateo, played by Patrick Keleher, appears in the episode alongside Kayla Vance, played by Naomi Grace.
That alone has fans paying extra attention to the âsons and daughtersâ title.
It seems like the finale may heavily focus on family connections. And the emotional consequences of the teamâs choices throughout the season. Considering how much season 23 emphasized legacy, mentorship, and personal sacrifice, the title honestly feels very on-brand.
At the same time, the show has also been planting seeds for major change inside NCIS itself. Between leadership uncertainty and ongoing tension surrounding Parkerâs methods, it wouldnât be surprising if the finale ends with at least one huge cliffhanger heading into season 24.
Actor Brian Dietzen, who plays Dr. Jimmy Palmer, told TV Insider:
“The finale, I got to say, Iâm not going to say itâs the same as the 500, but thereâs echoes of it. And people are not going to want to miss the last, what, five minutes of this show because it has the potential to change a lot within our universe yet again.”
And yep, fans are already preparing themselves emotionally.
No matter what happens in âSons and Daughters,â season 23 has made one thing very clear. âNCISâ still knows how to keep longtime viewers invested while evolving its characters in meaningful ways.
âNCISâ Season 23, Episode 20: âSons and Daughtersâ airs Tuesday, May 12, 2026 at 9:00pm ET on CBS.
