Next Battlefield is ‘tremendous live service’ with biggest team ever

EA has assembled the largest Battlefield team ever for the franchise, which will consist of ‘connected multiplayer and single-player experiences’.

With Battlefield 2042 officially coming to an end, EA is ramping up development on what’s been described as a ‘Battlefield universe’.

There are currently four teams work on the Battlefield franchise, including DICE, Criterion Games, Ripple Effect, and EA Motive – who were announced last month to be helping support development on the next entry.

In an earnings call for the company’s latest financial report, EA CEO Andrew Wilson teased what’s next for Battlefield from across those four studios – which he described as the ‘largest’ team in the franchise’s history.

‘With each immersive, action-packed season of Battlefield 2042, players have made it clear that they wanted an even deeper experience,’ Wilson said. ‘Our teams have listened to the community, have learned valuable lessons, and are driving to the future.

‘Motive, armed with cutting-edge Frostbite technology and compelling storytelling, is joining DICE, Criterion, and Ripple Effect to build a Battlefield universe across connected multiplayer and single-player experiences.

‘This is the largest Battlefield team in franchise history. A few weeks ago, I was visiting with the teams and I couldn’t be more excited about what they showed and what we were able to play.’

Later in the Q&A, when talking about Battlefield again, Wilson added: ‘I’ve just spent a whole bunch of time with the collective Battlefield team playing what they’re building, and it is going to be another tremendous live service.’

While the specifics of this connected Battlefield universe are yet to be officially announced, previous reports suggest EA is planning a free-to-play Warzone rival alongside a traditional paid-for game, which are both rumoured to be coming out in October 2025.

Ridgeline Games were previously working on a single-player campaign for a new Battlefield, but the studio was shut down in February as part of wider layoffs across EA. Criterion Games, best known for Burnout and Need For Speed, were then drafted in to complete that studio’s work.

At this point Battlefield almost feels like a cursed franchise for EA, as multiple times it’s seemed poised to rival Activision’s Call Of Duty, in terms of mainstream popularity, only to be brought low by launch problems and, in the case of Battlefield 2042, a thorough rejection by the series’ core audience.

Despite this fact, and much like Need For Speed, EA continually gives the franchise second chances, with this latest attempt seeming to have even more weight behind it than usual.
