North West has already released an EP, performed at major music festivals and owns a jacket once worn by Michael Jackson, but apparently what she really wants is a shift at Starbucks.
The 13-year-old daughter of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West has revealed that despite growing up in one of the world’s most famous and extraordinarily wealthy families, she’s hoping to try her hand at a surprisingly normal teenage job next year.
Speaking to Dazed about what she might do if she wasn’t an artist, North initially ruled out her earlier ambition of becoming a basketball player before revealing a more attainable career plan.
‘I still wanna work. I wanna work at, like, Starbucks next year,’ she said. ‘I think I can next year ’cause I’m gonna be 14, so… I think I can. I want to have a regular job, I guess.’
There is something undeniably delightful about a child who has been attending Paris Fashion Week since primary school deciding what her life is really missing is an eight-hour shift making oat milk Frappuccinos.
It’s all a little Common People, except instead of a Greek heiress wanting to ‘live like common people,’ it’s the eldest Kardashian-West child wanting to discover the thrill of hearing ‘Grande iced caramel macchiato for Sarah’ approximately 400 times a day.
Of course, North’s idea of a ‘regular job’ would be arriving from a rather unusual starting point.
Her version of childhood has included attending the Met Gala before she was technically born, making headlines at Paris Fashion Week aged six and, more recently, launching a music career before becoming old enough for GCSEs.
She released her six-track debut EP, N0rth4evr, in May, blending rage rap, emo, hyperpop, rock and metal, and has already begun performing the material live.
North made a surprise appearance with rapper Molly Santana at Rolling Loud in Orlando before performing her first solo festival set at Summer Smash in June.
And despite being only 13, she doesn’t appear particularly interested in waiting around before pursuing her ambitions.
Asked about the worst advice she’d ever received, North replied: ‘To start my career later. It’s like, nah, this is my hobby, this is what I like to do, this is what I wanna do with my life.’
Her ideal day isn’t exactly one spent horizontal on the sofa watching TikTok either, with the teenager explaining that she doesn’t ‘like to rest a lot’.
Instead, she described spending her time at rehearsals and in the recording studio as a ‘perfect day’, while performing a major show would make it even better.
North has also developed a distinctive image independent from her famous parents, currently sporting blue hair inspired by virtual Japanese pop star Hatsune Miku alongside a collection of real and fake piercings.
She revealed that she desperately wants her bridge pierced but isn’t allowed, joking about her relatively tame rebellion: ‘Everyone’s in love with boys, vaping and doing all kinds of bad stuff. All I want is blue hair and piercings.’
Her wardrobe is similarly unlikely to be funded by a teenage barista’s pay packet.
North named her Rick Owens Geobaskets among her most treasured fashion possessions and revealed mum Kim previously gifted her a Michael Jackson jacket. When asked whose wardrobe she would most like to swap with, she simply replied: ‘Honestly, I like my closet the best.’
North is the eldest of Kim and Kanye’s four children, alongside Saint, 10, Chicago, eight, and Psalm, seven. The former couple married in 2014 before Kim filed for divorce in 2021, with their split finalised the following year.
If your Starbucks order next year is handed over by a blue-haired teenager wearing a £2000 Rick Owens shirt, try to act normal.
