The Little Drummer Girl currently boasts a score of 95% positive on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with Metro’s Adam Miller describing it as ‘a great female superhero tale.’
Screen Rant described the cast as ‘phenomenal,’ while singing the praises of filmmaker Park Chan-wook (Oldboy, Stoker), calling his direction ‘masterful.’
Independent asserted that ‘almost everything about this production is wonderful,’ while The Times said that it was ‘addictive.’
All of which contributed to its impressive Rotten Tomatoes score – and a strong word of mouth shared by viewers at home.
Rotten Tomatoes user K Y called it ‘deliciously filmed,’ while an unnamed user described it as ‘superbly acted and beautifully filmed!’
‘It is Pugh’s show,’ Gareth V pointed out, ‘and she proves to be one of the finest talents of her generation.’
Pugh was handpicked for the part by Korean director Park Chan-wook, who returned to the big screen this year with No Other Choice.
Speaking about her character in 2018, Pugh told Metro: ‘She is gobby, she is fierce, she is very intelligent and funny, and she has a brilliant ability to manipulate a situation in the way that she wants.’
She continued: ‘But those are her qualities, which I think that the moment we’re so used to female characters being so great – and that’s amazing – but what’s so fantastic about Charlie is that she’s very normal.’
‘I think that’s quite unique and special. We look at her and think, “She reminds me of all the special women in my life.”
‘There’s nothing that amazing other than the fact that she’s normal.’
She stars opposite Skarsgård, who revealed that he’d never had signed on if the show had showed any signs of bias.
‘I would not have been in it had it not been a black and white, the good Israeli Mossad agents versus the evil Palestinian terrorists,’ the actor told Metro. ‘But I knew that wouldn’t be the case.
‘I’d read a couple of Le Carré’s novels prior to this, and he’s an extraordinary, intelligent writer, and he makes it morally difficult for you to pick a side, which is very, very important because I think it’s crucial to understand the plight of the other side.’
