Since it hit screens in 2022, The 1% Club has kept us all gripped with mind-bending teasers that require a lot of lateral thinking to solve.

While most game shows ask you to flex your general knowledge, this one sees Lee Mack guiding 100 contestants through a string of logic problems in order to win the prize pot.

Contestants are slowly eliminated and only those who survive until the end are given the chance to crack the final question that only 1% of the population can answer.

And while some successfully risk it all for a life-changing sum of money, it’s a different story for others — as Saturday night’s repeated episode proves.

An impressive five contestants made it through to that all-important final question, with a cool £97,000 to be split between those who solved the puzzle.

Except none did.

This is what the quintet were faced with: What new word links the capitalised words below?

My SON TED ate raw FOOD and got SICK, then went to BED with me by his SIDE.

It left the contestants stumped, with answers including ‘well’, ‘you’, ‘step’ and ‘nest’, while one player, Peter, guessed nothing at all.

What was the correct answer, and did you get it right?

Well, we can tell you it was the word ‘sea‘. As Lee Mack explained on the show: ‘The word “sea” can be put in front of each of the capitalised words to make new words.’

Prefixing sea before each word would give you ‘season’, ‘seated’, ‘seafood’, ‘seasick’, ‘seabed’ and ‘seaside’.

All of which left the prize pot unclaimed in the episode first aired in May 2025.

It’s not the first contestants have gone home empty handed after falling at the final hurdle.

Last weekend’s re-run saw players Christopher and Scott trying to win a share of £95,000 by defeating a puzzler involving triangles.

The 1% Club question leaves contestants losing over 95K - can you get it right?
The triangle puzzle on a recent repeat of the show also floored the finalists (Picture: ITV)

The question was: How many triangles are there in this picture?

And we admit that it’s a lot trickier than it looks because while some of the triangles within the image are obvious, there are others which aren’t quite so noticeable at first glance.

While the correct answer was 18, Christopher guessed eight and Scott was just off the mark with an answer of 19.

All of which proves that it might be easy to play along at home, but sometimes the show’s questions can defy even the most logical brain.

Especially when you only have 30 seconds to give the answer.
