The Elder Scrolls 6 is already playable in ‘early builds’ reveals Bethesda

Still a long way off (Picture: Bethesda)

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of The Elder Scrolls, Bethesda has shared a progress update on the upcoming sixth instalment in the franchise.

The Elder Scrolls 6 was announced way back in 2018, and there’s been little update since then, but now it seems like development is accelerating on Bethesda’s long-awaited follow-up to Skyrim.

Bethesda’s former head of publishing, Pete Hines, confirmed the fantasy role-playing sequel was in early development last August. Since then though, we’ve heard little else – aside from it supposedly having a similar style of progression to its predecessor.

Now, with Starfield out in the wild, the company has allowed The Elder Scrolls to take the limelight, in order to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

In a post on Twitter, Bethesda commemorated the franchise’s launchm with 1994’s The Elder Scrolls: Arenam and reminisced over the series’ history so far.

‘Arena started it all, with the entirety of Tamriel generated for you to explore freely,’ the post reads. ‘Daggerfall moved that into a smaller region with political intrigue and a detailed character system.

‘Morrowind took it to new exotic lands and introduced the series to both consoles and the world of modding and creators. Oblivion brought us to the heart of the Empire, realms beyond, and all new gameplay mechanics. Skyrim let you do battle with dragons in Tamriel’s harsh northern province.’

Skipping to the present, Bethesda provided an update on the next instalment, adding: ‘Last but not least, yes, we are in development on the next chapter – The Elder Scrolls 6. Even now, returning to Tamriel and playing early builds has us filled with the same joy, excitement, and promise of adventure.’

While it’s a small update, it’s nonetheless a sign Bethesda is now full steam ahead on The Elder Scrolls 6. It still might be a long way off yet though, after Microsoft previously implied it wouldn’t be out until 2028.

As Microsoft pushes towards putting more Xbox exclusive games on other platforms, the biggest question at this stage is whether The Elder Scrolls 6 will come out on PlayStation 5 as well.

The company recently announced titles including Grounded, Hi-Fi Rush, and Pentiment for other consoles, while Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer didn’t rule out the possibility of Starfield and Indiana Jones making the same transition – so it’s certainly a possible.

Along with The Elder Scrolls 6, Bethesda also recently confirmed it has an early plan for Fallout 5 – although that’s going to take even longer to come to fruition.
