A toddler and man have died and at least 39 others have been wounded in Memorial Day weekend shootings in Chicago from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Tuesday.
Despite the violence — including a surge Monday night into early Tuesday that saw about a dozen people shot — the city appeared to be on track toward the lowest number of fatal shootings in at least 16 years during Memorial Day weekend.
The two deaths of the weekend — beginning at 5 p.m. Friday and ending at 5 a.m. Tuesday — came after toddler Jamonte Shaw, 2, shot himself Sunday, according to Chicago police. The boyfriend of the toddler’s mom, Johnny R. Hughes, 31, was charged with child endangerment resulting in death, possession of a firearm as a repeat felon, aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon and unlawful use of a weapon.
Another shooting that turned fatal was listed as a death investigation. A 32-year-old man was fatally shot in his head in the 200 block of North Francisco about 11:25 a.m. Monday. The cause of his death was pending a police investigation, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
At least eight of those wounded were in two mass shootings in Little Village and Austin.

They were all taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good conditions, officials said.

Police officers heard gunshots and found the four victims shot in the 2500 block of South Washtenaw Avenue around 3 a.m. The victims told officers the gunman ran from the scene. No one has been arrested. All four shooting victims were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition: a 14-year-old boy shot in his arm; an 18-year-old woman shot in her buttocks; a 16-year-old girl was shot in her leg, and a second 16-year-old girl also shot in her leg.
About 15 minutes later, another shooting left multiple people injured.
