A 17-year-old boy and three men were shot during a street takeover in Rosemead early Sunday, April 12, authorities said.
It was not immediately clear if the four were the intended targets or just happened to be caught in the gunfire.
The other three victims were ages 19, 21 and 22. All four were hospitalized, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
The takeover occurred at the intersection of Del Mar Avenue and Garvey Avenue. The shooting happened around 1:50 a.m. Details on the circumstances leading up to it were not available.
The shooting followed a recent uptick in increasingly chaotic street takeovers across Los Angeles County.
In March, a Metro Rapid Bus filled with commuting passengers became stuck in the middle of a takeover in Los Angeles on the corner South Figueroa Street and Alondra Boulevard. Video footage captured almost a dozen people standing on top of the bus, while others tagged the windows amidst a backdrop of drivers doing doughnuts at the intersection.
In downtown Long Beach, at least 50 people participated in a “ride-out” or street takeover of what police said included illegal e-motos, pocket bikes, and e-bikes driving “recklessly” around regular traffic. Six vehicles were towed and a teenager was arrested.
Anyone with information regarding the Rosemead street takeover is asked to call the sheriff’s Temple station at 626-285-7171. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or visit lacrimestoppers.org.
