Over three dozen people have been shot in Chicago over the Labor Day holiday weekend.
Of the 38 people shot from 5 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Tuesday, eight have died, according to Chicago police. At least five teenagers were wounded in separate shootings.
The weekend’s violence was lower than last Labor Day weekend, when nine people were killed and 52 wounded.
Labor Day marks the end of summer. And this season has been historically peaceful in Chicago, compared to past years.
The city had 122 murders in June, July and August — the lowest summer total since 1965. Last year, total violence also hit record lows for the first time in decades.
Despite decreasing violence, six people have been killed and 28 wounded this weekend in shootings mainly on the South and West sides. One person was also injured in a stabbing Friday night.
The first fatal shooting happened during an argument Friday night in Chicago Lawn. Josh Washington, 28, was fatally shot in his abdomen by a person he was arguing with in the 7300 block of South Kedzie Avenue.
At around 2 a.m. Saturday, two people fatally shot a man in West Englewood. Enderson Linares, 29, was in the 6500 block of South Laflin Street when the two people shot him and fled in a blue sedan. Linares, who lived on the block where he was killed, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Crystal Salter was found in a Near West Side home suffering from several gunshot wounds just after midnight Sunday. Officers discovered inside the home in the 2100 block of West Jackson Boulevard. She was pronounced dead at Stroger Hospital. A suspect in her shooting, a 49-year-old man, was found fatally shot about 2 a.m. in the 2200 block of West Warren Avenue. His death was ruled a suicide, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
A Springfield man was fatally shot Sunday afternoon in the Austin neighborhood. Jerome Kirk, 20, was sitting in a car in the 300 block of North Lamon Avenue when a person walked up to the vehicle and fired shots.
A 26-year-old man was fatally shot Sunday evening near Kosciuszko Park in the Logan Square neighborhood. Officers found the man, who has not been identified, unresponsive on the ground with a gunshot wound to his back in the 2700 block of North Harding Avenue.
Around 7:30 a.m. Monday, a 27-year-old woman was found fatally shot inside a Woodlawn home in the 6300 block of South Vernon Avenue. Daje Williams, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said they were conducting a homicide investigation.
Around 11:55 p.m. Monday, two men were arguing with someone they knew inside the home in the 600 block of West 74th Street when they were both shot to death, police said.
This summer’s two other holiday weekends also saw below-average levels of violence.
Memorial Day was the least deadly weekend for the holiday in 16 years. Two people died and at least 38 were wounded in Chicago.
Five people were killed and 23 were hurt in the least violent Fourth of July weekend in at least seven years.
