Bass parts ways with top strategist helming her re-election bid

Douglas Herman, a top political strategist for Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, stepped down Wednesday from his role on her reelection campaign, months before she is set to face off against City Councilwoman Nithya Raman in a November runoff.

Herman has been with Bass since 2021, and helped lead her to victory in 2022, when she defeated billionaire Rick Caruso in the mayoral race.

Herman told City News Service in a telephone interview that his decision to leave the campaign was due to “strategic differences,” but he did not elaborate further.

Julie Chávez Rodriguez will be taking over for Herman, according to Alex Stack, a spokesman for Bass’ reelection campaign.

“Going into the general election, our campaign is proud to announce that Julie Chávez Rodríguez will be leading the team,” Stack said in a statement.

Chávez Rodríguez is a political strategist and organizer who has dedicated her career to advancing the rights of working people, and building leadership and power with and among communities of color, according to Bass’ campaign.

Most recently, she ran Unidos for Karen Bass 2026, an independent expenditure campaign focused on turning out Latino voters during the June primary.

She is also the granddaughter of César Chávez, who co-founded the United Farm Workers union. Chávez Rodríguez worked for the Obama and Biden administrations, as well as served as campaign manager for Joe Biden’s 2024 presidential campaign, and then for Kamala Harris, who lost to President Donald Trump.
