Bears coach Ben Johnson considers TE Cole Kmet’s right knee injury serious

Bears tight end Cole Kmet was carted off the field in the fourth quarter Thursday night after hurting his right knee.

Kmet caught a second-down pass from quarterback Caleb Williams and ran up the Bears’ sideline, where he was tackled. Kmet went down immediately, was surrounded by teammates and coaches and was eventually taken to the locker room.

The tight end was cheered as he was carted into the northwest tunnel. He gave a thumbs up to fans.

The Bears ruled him out shortly, and coach Ben Johnson was grim about the outlook afterward.

“I don’t think it looked very good,” he said.

For a coach who rarely reveals much about injuries, that’s his way of saying that was a serious one.

Kmet had three catches for 28 yards against the Patriots. The catch on which was injured was a big moment for the Bears, who held a six-point lead and were facing second-and-nine from their own 10-yard line.

Kmet, a second-round pick out of Notre Dame in 2020, is the Bears’ most senior offensive player. He entered the game with seven catches for 59 yards on the season.
