Bears offensive line looks for improvement, urgency after rough season opener

One issue for the Bears’ offense in their 24-17 win over the Titans in the opener was their line.

The ground game averaged just 3.8 yards per carry — the team was sixth in the NFL at 4.5 last season — and quarterback Caleb Williams had the second-least time in the pocket at an average of 2.1 seconds, according to Pro Football Reference.

“Everybody needs to be better and have more consistency and urgency,” left tackle Braxton Jones said. “Going through the film, there’s some really good things to look at and some not-so-good things.

“The biggest thing is seeing it’s all things we could control. It’s nothing the Titans were coming out and doing that we couldn’t stop. It’s all self-inflicted.”

There’s a limit on how much time that group gets to find its footing. Four starters are back from last season, and the Bears need reliable protection for Williams as he adjusts to the NFL.

“It’s about making him comfortable back there,” left guard Teven Jenkins said. “When he does feel comfortable, he’s able to rip it.”
