Bears’ practice report: It’s a scorcher out there!

Breaking down the Bears’ Wednesday training camp practice with the Titans:

What happened

The team went over an hour as the temperature hit 94 degrees, and the players got frequent two-minute water breaks because of the heat. That weather could be similar to what they encounter next Sunday against the Panthers. The offense worked mainly on various scenarios where they were trailing late in the game.

New guy

Cornerback Clark Phillips wasn’t expecting the Falcons to trade him, but they sent him to the Bears as part of the Gervon Dexter trade Sunday. “It’s definitely a unique thing,” he said of changing teams so close to the start of the season. “But I’m prepared for it. I’m excited to be here.” The Bears are testing whether he can help them at nickel cornerback, or if he’s going to be exclusively on the outside.

Lineup forming

All indications point toward the Bears going with veteran Kentavius Street, whom defensive coordinator Dennis Allen called “the most-productive tackle we had throughout the course of training camp,” in place of Gervon Dexter. Rookie Malik Muhammad is in line to start at nickel cornerback for Kyler Gordon, and Xavier Woods at safety for Coby Bryant.

Injury updates

The Bears were mostly healthy: Only running back Kyle Monangai, defensive end Austin Booker and linebacker D’Marco Jackson were out. Defensive end Marcus Davenport, on the practice squad, exited after individual drills. Cornerback Jaylon Johnson (elbow) was full-go.

What’s next?

The Bears will hold their final preseason practice Thursday, then give players a long weekend to refresh.

The Bears were mostly healthy Wednesday, and the team built in a lot of water/rest breaks into its hour-plus practice.
Williams said money is “not a motivating factor.” Instead, his real goals are to play his entire career with the Bears and be on a championship-caliber team.
