Bears QB Caleb Williams: I’ll probably talk ‘Iceman’ with George Gervin soon

Bears quarterback Caleb Williams said he plans to talk with Basketball Hall of Famer George Gervin about their dueling trademark applications for the nickname ‘‘Iceman,’’ but he admitted the issue isn’t a top priority.

‘‘We’ll probably speak, like I said, at some point,’’ Williams said on the first day of the Bears’ offseason program Monday. ‘‘Haven’t spoken yet. Have been running around, been busy. . . . We’ll figure it out here soon.’’

Last month, Williams filed for copyright protection for his ‘‘Iceman’’ nickname on sports apparel and other items. Four days later, Gervin — a 12-time All-Star and Spurs legend who was nicknamed the ‘‘Iceman’’ in 1973 — filed his own trademark application. Gervin, who ended his career with the Bulls in 1985-86, told the Sun-Times that, in sports, he was “really the ‘Iceman.’

Williams said he found the public reaction to the nickname application funny but referred to the issue as ‘‘an open-ended thing’’ he still was trying to figure out.
