Bears running back Kyle Monangai left practice Sunday after appearing to hurt his right knee.
Monangai got tangled with defensive tackle Grady Jarrett during a drill. Bears players were not wearing full pads.
About half the Bears’ roster participated in Sunday’s practice, which began roughly 24 hours after the conclusion of Saturday’s exhibition win against the Browns. Monangai did not play in that game, nor did most of the Bears’ relevant offensive players.
A seventh-round pick from Rutgers, Monangai had an eye-opening rookie year, running 169 times for 783 yards last season. He started one game, during which he ran for 176 yards in a win against the Bengals.
He entered training camp entrenched behind starter D’Andre Swift. Behind him are question marks: Roschon Johnson, Salvon Ahmed, Coleman Bennett and Brittain Brown. Johnson led the Bears in carries and rushing yards Saturday. Ahmed scored a 49-yard touchdown on a screen pass.
Swift and Monangai were shockingly durable last year, handling all but eight carries given to Bears running backs.
Bears players were concerned about Monangai when he went down — chief among them Jarrett. Monangai was examined by a trainer and walked to the locker room.
“Hopefully it’s nothing too crazy significant,” guard Joe Thuney said. “But football is football. It’s tough.”
