What happened Wednesday at Halas Hall:
Gordon back at practice
Kyler Gordon, who hurt his calf this spring and hasn’t practiced since, participated in full in Wednesday’s walk-through, opening a 21-day window for the slot cornerback to return to game action from the physically-unable-to-perform list. Gordon cannot play in a game until Week 5; if he’s not activated by Oct. 20, he’ll be lost for the season.
Gordon’s calf injury has been a major source of frustration from his bosses inside Halas Hall, with coach Ben Johnson often giving terse, monosyllabic answers when pressed for updates. He rehabbed the injury both inside and outside the facility in recent weeks. Still, Gordon has rarely practiced or played since he signed a contract extension in April 2025. He appeared in three games last season and went to IR twice because of various soft-tissue maladies.
Jones ‘week-to-week’
Left tackle Theo Benedet figures to start this week against the Jets after Johnson called Braxton Jones “week-to-week” with a knee injury suffered Monday. He would not have participated had the Bears held a full practice, according to the team’s esetimated injury report. Neither would guard Jonah Jackson (personal), while safety Cam Lewis was limited with a hip problem.
As for Benedet’s backup, Johnson suggested that the team could use Jordan McFadden or even star guard Joe Thuney in a pinch. Ozzy Trapilo is still working his way back from a patellar tendon injury.
Dexter gets paid
Exactly one month after the Bears traded him to the Falcons because he’d fallen out of their rotation, defensive tackle Gervon Dexter signed a four-year, $78 million contract extension. He was playing the last season of his rookie deal.
