The Bears sent fans home from Halas Hall minutes before the start of Saturday’s practice because of the threat of lightning and decided to begin their practice indoors to the Walter Payton Center.
Coach Ben Johnson seemed fine with practicing in the rain. Despite storms that stretched overnight into the morning, the Bears kept the practice open to the public. That changed with the lightning warning. The team offered a discount in the team store to fans who had to leave.
About an hour before practice began, special teams coordinator Richard Hightower said he was looking forward to practicing in a “squall” later in the day.
“Embrace the opportunity to go out in the wet and rainy weather … ” he said “Because we get to work ball security. The returners get to work that. We get to see it. The snappers can snap the ball in this type of weather. We get to see if we can kick in it and we get to see, you know, who is ready to rock and roll no matter what the elements are because as you know we play in Soldier (Field) and everything is unpredictable.”
The Bears planned to move practice back outside after beginning indoors.
Saturday was supposed to be the second of 10 open practices this summer. The Bears will practice in Cincinnati and Nashville in August before preseason games against the Bengals and Titans, respectively.
Saturday marked the Bears’ last practice of a four-day run. They’ll have Sunday off before returning to Halas Hall on Monday for their first padded practice of training camp.
