Bears sign QB Miller Moss as backup plan for Sunday

With quarterback Tyson Bagent dealing with a back injury, the Bears signed Miller Moss to the practice squad and gave him a standard elevation for Sunday’s game.

Moss, a rookie from Louisville who once teamed with Caleb Williams at USC, was with the Bears during training camp. Bagent is part of the Bears’ traveling party flying to Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday, but Moss’ addition points to him not playing. Bagent practiced Tuesday before being put on the injury report on Wednesday, which was an off day, with a back problem. He didn’t practice all week. On Friday, the Bears called him questionable. He doesn’t figure to be acative Sunday.

Coach Ben Johnson said Friday that the Bears would be “fine” if they had to rely on third-stringer Case Keenum to step into his place. Keenum has thrown 60 passes in games since the end of the 2021 season. In that case, Moss would serve as the third quarterback.

Bagent missed the Bears’ game preseason game against the Bengals — and the joint practice two days earlier — after injuring his hamstring in the first preseason game.

The Bears also promoted training camp standout Kaden Davis, a receiver, from the practice squad. To make room for Moss, they released safety Keidron Smith from the practice squad.

By league rule, the Bears had to update their injuries and promotions before they left Halas Hall for the airport on Saturday.
