Breaking down the Bears’ Tuesday training camp practice:
What happened
Despite Ben Johnson predicting a “big-time practice,” the Bears’ long-awaited scrimmage wasn’t nearly as blood-thirsty as the physical session the team held at this time last year. The plays weren’t scripted, the atmosphere was controlled and practice ended earlier than the original schedule dictated.
The Bears’ first-team offense went against the first-team and second-team defense, and vice versa.
Two running backs stood out at practice — for different reasons. D’Andre Swift rattled off a 62-yard touchdown down the right sideline against the second-team defense. Later, Roschon Johnson fumbled at his own 1-yard line when hit by cornerback Dontae Manning. Veteran linebacker Jon Rhattigan recovered the ball for a touchdown.
Earlier, when the first-team offense started at their own 1, Rome Odunze caught a pass and ran 58 yards to flip the field.
Practice ended after safety Skyler Thomas intercepted Tyson Bagent in a two-minute drill.
Injury update
Bears players who didn’t participate include receivers Luther Burden and Zavion Thomas; cornerbacks Jaylon Jones and Terell Smith; left tackle Braxton Jones; linebacker D’Marco Jackson; guard Luke Newman; and defensive end Montez Sweat.
Linebacker Tony Fields II left practice early and rode back on a cart. Cornerback Tyrique Stevenson wasn’t spotted in the final team drill.
What’s next?
The Bears are off Wednesday before returning to practice Thursday at Halas Hall.
The Bears originally hadn’t expected him back on the field until “deep” into the season at best, general manager Ryan Poles said in January, but Ben Johnson believes there’s a chance Trapilo will be back relatively soon.

The Bears insist their two-deep is far from official. Rather, they’re required to post it in advance of Saturday’s preseason opener against the Browns at Soldier Field. Most of the Bears starters are unlikely to play much, if at all, on Saturday.
