Breaking down the Bears’ Thursday training camp practice:
What happened
The Bears didn’t do anything too advanced or intense, but quarterback Caleb Williams was sharp throughout.
Williams’ best play was a 55-yard touchdown pass to veteran wide receiver Kalif Raymond up the left side. Raymond beat cornerback Tyrique Stevenson, and safety Coby Bryant couldn’t get over in time to help him. As Raymond streak toward the end zone, Williams put the ball perfectly in front of him to catch it in stride and race away.
Even when things went wrong, they still worked out for Williams. Late in practice, he had a pass tipped as tight end Cole Kmet and a defender went for the ball, and it redirected to Luther Burden for a short gain.
Ups and downs
Stevenson had a choppy practice overall as he tries to secure a starting job. The team has him penciled in on the outside opposite Jaylon Johnson, but he faces a tough challenge yet again from Terell Smith.
Injury watch
Running back Kyle Monangai was out with what is likely a minor issue, while star defensive end Montez Sweat returned from a brief absence due to injury and looked ready for a regular workload.
What’s next?
The Bears will hold their first open practice Friday at 8:30 a.m.
