Breaking down the Bears’ Saturday training camp practice:
What happened
The Bears sent fans home from Halas Hall minutes before the start of Saturday’s practice because a lightning sensor detected danger in the area. The team offered a discount in their online team store to the displaced fans.
They began practice indoors at the Walter Payton Center and eventually moved back outside, where the rain that had pounded Halas Hall all night had subsided. Coaches seemed a little disappointed — special teams coordinator Richard Hightower had opined that he wanted to practice in a “squall.”
Kicker Cairo Santos handled the wet turf well, hooking a 53-yard kick between the uprights after pushing a 50-yarder wide left.
Safety Coby Bryant made the best play of practice, picking off Caleb Williams on a deep shot over the middle.
Former NFL receiver Chad Ochochinco, who played briefly under Johnson with the Dolphins, was on the sideline.
Position Battle Watch
Rookie receiver Zavion Thomas, who caught a touchdown pass from Tyson Bagent, was sharp as he continues to fight for the team’s fourth receiver job behind Rome Odunze, Luther Burden and Kalif Raymond.
“Nice call by coach Ben,” he said with a smile.
Injury report
Running back Kyle Monangai missed his third-straight practice.
What’s next
The Bears practice are off Sunday.
