Big Bear bald eagle Jackie, suffering from anemic-like conditions for unknown reasons, continued to be treated at an Ojai raptor center Sunday, Aug. 9, after 24 hours described as “incredibly difficult.”
The eagle “remains critically ill, and her condition is currently unstable. Yesterday, her packed cell volume (PCV) fell below 6%. Today it has risen to 9%. While this is a small improvement, her PCV remains critically low and her overall condition remains extremely serious,” the Ojai Raptor Center said on social media Sunday.

“The past 24 hours have been incredibly difficult,” the post said.
Experts have been working to determine what is causing her low levels of packed cell volume — the percentage of red blood cells in the bloodstream.
The center reported a collaborative team is evaluating Jackie’s care and condition. It includes nine veterinarians and representatives from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
“Our entire focus remains on (her) welfare and providing the care she needs. Every decision continues to be guided by her medical condition and what is in her best interest,” the social media post said.
Last month, the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley, which operate webcams in the San Bernardino Mountains documenting the lives of Big Bear eagles Jackie, her mate Shadow and their offspring, reported Jackie was found grounded and was rescued after a fight with other eagles. It was later learned Jackie wasn’t injured in the fight but likely was suffering from a condition causing her anemia.
The Ojai Raptor Center has said notes or cards of encouragement for Jackie can be sent to:

Additionally, the Southern California News Group created this online board for those who want to send her well-wishes as the care team treats Jackie.
