Police have arrested a man on suspicion of murder and attempted murder of a child (Picture: PA)
Sinn Féin councillor Deirdre Varsani, who is also chairwoman of Mid Ulster District Council, said: ‘Our first concern is for any victims that are involved and anybody who may have witnessed any traumatic events at the time as well.
‘There are all kinds of aspects and all kinds of feelings that this might bring up in people.
‘This particular incident appears to have been at the more extreme end of a domestic incident, with a man now confirmed dead and a child seriously injured.’
DCI Robinson said: ‘The body of a man was discovered inside a home on the Lisnahull Road at around 11am yesterday, Saturday 29th August.
A seriously injured child and a woman who had sustained non-life threatening injuries were also present in the home.
‘The cause of the man’s death has not yet been formally established and post-mortem examinations will take place in due course.
‘A male, who was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, remains in custody.
‘As such, it would be inappropriate to comment further and I would ask that the public avoid speculation until we can provide further updates.
‘However, I want to reassure the public that we do not believe that there is any ongoing risk, and at this stage we are not seeking anyone else in relation to the death.
‘Our thoughts are very much with the family and friends of those involved.’
