Burroughs snaps Arcadia baseball’s 25-game league winning streak

ARCADIA — Burroughs senior pitcher Devin Whittekiend couldn’t remember the last time the Bears beat Arcadia’s baseball team.

He’s not alone. A lot of teams and players in the Pacific League would be thinking the same thing, because it doesn’t happen very often.

Burroughs, behind a strong pitching performance from Whittekiend, along with some timely hitting, defeated Arcadia 6-3 on Tuesday to snap the Apaches’ 25-game league winning streak.

Whittekiend, who touched 90 mph several times, went six innings, allowed three runs with three strikeouts. He also had a double and scored a run.

“I was just thinking throw strikes. My off-speed was going to work today,” Whittekiend said. “I was throwing the slider and that was pretty much it. Last year we lost to them when I was on the bump. I don’t think I’ve beaten them in the four years I’ve been here, so this was a solid win.”

The Apaches get another crack at Burroughs when the teams play Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Arcadia’s Jordan Vogel went 3 for 4 and scored twice. Tyler Brereton had a double and two hits, but the Apaches didn’t get much more offense than that, finishing with seven hits.

Apaches starting pitcher Peter Cuoco went five innings and had five strikeouts. He was charged with five of the Bears’ six runs.

Probably the most frustrating part of the game for Apaches coach Nick Lemas was his team’s sloppy play. The Apaches hit four batters and some wild pitches helped the Bears advance on the base paths.

“He’s good,” Lemas said of Whittekiend. “It’s a good team. It’s not a bad loss, I’m just disappointed. I feel we gave them some free bases with wild pitches, hit by pitches and the bottom of the order didn’t really produce anything offensively.

“We’re going to have to be better if we’re going to come back and beat them on Friday. It’s a tough league, we know they’re hungry. They’re a senior-heavy team and they really want it. We have to come out and match that intensity on Friday.”

Burroughs was the last team to beat Arcadia in league, which came during the 2024 season. The Apaches are 31-1 over the past three seasons, and since the 2019 season they’re 77-5 and have won six league titles.

Burroughs improves to 16-3 overall and 9-0 in league while the Apaches drop to 13-8 and 8-1.

“I didn’t know they had a (25-game) winning streak, that’s awesome,” Burroughs coach Matt Magallon said. “Their coach (Lemas) does such a great job over there. He is the master class of this league and I respect him so much because he makes us a better team and a better program because we have to prepare for them.”

The Apaches threatened to score a few times, but Whittekiend never allowed a blow-up inning.

“He did a great job. He’s pitched in big situations, he’s played in big games,” Magallon said of Whittekiend. “Last year, he really had a rough time here. They really put it on him. He wanted to really prove himself and I just couldn’t be more proud of him.”

The Apaches, coming off consecutive weeks of playing in the National Classic and Boras Classic in Orange County, where they went 3-5 against a host of quality teams, started out strong as Cuoco struck out the side in the top of the first inning.

Vogel led off the bottom half of the first with a double and later scored on Damian Catano’s sacrifice fly to right for a 1-0 lead.

But Burroughs’ bats came alive after that. Thomas Martin, who had two hits and two RBIs, singled home Jack Smith in the second inning to tie the score, 1-1.

Whittekind helped himself by leading off the fourth inning with a double and Smith singled him home. Martin’s infield single scored Smith to extend Burroughs’ lead to 3-1.

The Apaches didn’t go away.

Brereton doubled and later scored on Aiden Soto’s fly to center to cut Burroughs’ lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Apaches tied the score on Mike Manzo’s RBI single that scored Vogel in the fifth to make it 3-3.

Burroughs came through in the sixth inning to take the lead for good. Kayson Montgomery singled in a run and Elliott Ross’ fly ball brought in Slater Mersola to put Burroughs up 5-3.

Burroughs added an insurance run in the seventh inning on a wild pitch.
