Daily News track athletes shine at Arcadia Invitational

ARCADIA — Daily News runners and sprinters hit the track at the Arcadia Invitational, the self-proclaimed “Home of National Records.”

Friday’s “Burning Batons” session featured the relays, sprint medleys and 3,200-meter races, while the remaining open events were held Saturday.

More than 60 local athletes competed at Arcadia against some of the fastest high school runners in the country.

Notre Dame closed strong to win the boys invitational 4×110 shuttle hurdle relay in 58.77.

“We knew that if we just ran a clean and smooth race, we would get the job done,” Notre Dame senior Maxwell Martin-Beckmann said.

Notre Dame later placed third in the invitational boys 800 sprint medley relay in 1:30.38.

St. Francis followed in eighth at 1:34.73.

Five local runners competed in the girls 3,200 open, rated and seeded heats.

Reese Tamburro of Agoura finished 14th in the open heat with a personal-best 10:54.12.

“I knew that this competition was going to bring me to sub-11 because all of the girls are really good,” Tamburro said.

In the rated heat of the 3,200, Harvard-Westlake sophomore Jia Rhee placed ninth in 10:41.89.

In the seeded section, Oaks Christian’s Delaney Napierala took fourth with a personal-best 10:28.27, and Thousand Oaks’ Maggie De la Rionda posted another personal best in 10:46.05.

To close out Friday’s Burning Batons session, Crescenta Valley took fourth in the invitational 4×1600 relay. The team consisted of seniors Dominic Esquival and Caleb Burton, sophomore Enzo Dik and freshman Owen Burton.

Saturday opened with Thousand Oaks placing third in its heat of the girls open 4×100 relay in 47.45.

Calabasas’ Devyn Sproles finished second in her heat of the girls 100 open in 11.81.

The girls open 400 featured three local athletes finishing under 58 seconds. Harvard-Westlake freshman Carter Perry ran 55.98, Moorpark freshman Camilla Peltonen clocked 56.16 and Notre Dame senior Taylor Martinez finished in 57.55.

In the seeded 4×100 relay, Calabasas placed second in the girls race in 44.54, while Moorpark took third in the boys race in 41.45.

In the boys invitational 4×100 relay, Notre Dame finished third in 41.02.

In the 100-meter races, seven local athletes finished in the top 10.

Calabasas’ Devyn Sproles and Olivia Kirk ran 11.66 and 11.33, respectively, to place third in their heats, while teammate Malia Rainey finished sixth in her section in 11.63.

Rainey and Kirk later ran 24.52 and 23.67, respectively, in the 200.

On the boys side, Notre Dame’s Quincy Hearn ran 10.57 to place third in his 100 heat, while Moorpark’s Jalen Aguilar-Carnes ran 10.65 for seventh. Newbury Park’s Jaden Griffin finished in 10.41, and Westlake’s Demare Dezeurn ran 10.45.

Dezeurn later won the seeded 200 in a personal-best 21.12.

Oaks Christian took second in the girls invitational 4,000 distance medley relay. Christina Smith, Savannah Williams, Madelyn Galle and Delaney Napierala completed the race in 11:52.76.

On the boys side, Oaks Christian also placed second in the event in 10:06.22 behind Sterling White, Brooks Bennett, Arizechukwu Nwosu and Vin Krueger.

In the final event, the boys 4×400 relay, Newbury Park and Notre Dame both turned in strong performances.

Newbury Park placed fifth in 3:19.15, while Notre Dame finished in 3:17.69 in the invitational heat.
