Some parts of the Chicago area felt a bit of rumbling Wednesday afternoon as the United States Geological Survey reported a 2.9-magnitude earthquake off the Lake Michigan shore by Kenilworth.
The earthquake began around 1:40 p.m. more than 12 miles east of the shore and about three miles under the lake’s surface, according to the federal agency. By 4:30 p.m., more than 100 people had reported saying they had felt the quake.
Most reports came from Highland Park, Libertyville, Evanston, Glencoe and Chicago’s north side neighborhoods, according to the agency. Three reports from the Garfield Ridge area reported the strongest intensity in the city.
Reports also came in from Skokie, Lincolnwood, Park Ridge, Wilmette and North Chicago. Loves Park, which is just north of Rockford — putting it more than 77 miles from the epicenter — was the furthest location where people reported feeling tremors from the quake.
