Chicago officer’s gun discharges while arresting suspect in North Lawndale

A Chicago police officer’s weapon discharged during an attempt to arrest a suspect accused of being in possession of a stolen vehicle early Tuesday in North Lawndale.

Around 3:40 a.m., Ogden Police District officers in the 1600 block of South Drake Avenue were trying to arrest a male for possession of a stolen vehicle when he tried to disarm an officer, police said.

An officer’s weapon discharged during the struggle, authorities said. No one was struck by gunfire. The officer suffered minor injuries and was taken to an area hospital in fair condition, officials said.

The suspect was arrested and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital for minor injuries, according to police.

The officers involved in the shooting will be placed on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability was investigating the shooting.
