Cleveland football stays unbeaten with dominant win over Taft

RESEDA — Cleveland (8-0, 3-0) defeated Taft (4-4, 1-2) 63-24 in a West Valley League football game Friday night.

The Cavaliers rushed for 336 yards on just 25 carries, averaging 13.4 yards per attempt, to remain unbeaten.

Senior Moyo Odebunmi led the way with 198 yards on 14 carries, including touchdown runs of 40 and 38 yards. He also returned a kickoff 78 yards for a touchdown before leaving the game in the third quarter with a shoulder injury.

Junior Shiloh Wickliffe kept the offense rolling in his absence, rushing for 111 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries. He scored on runs of 30 and 66 yards and added a 38-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Domenik Fuentes.

“I just want to say thank you to our line,” Wickliffe said. “They worked real hard this week. Shout out to Mo. He’s our main star running back. All props to him. After he got hurt we just had to win this one for him.”

Taft struck first when quarterback Aiden Melia connected with Sam Berger for a touchdown on the opening drive.

Odebunmi answered with his 78-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to get Cleveland on the scoreboard.

“We’ve got a really dynamic one-two punch, especially now with Shiloh,” Cleveland coach Mario Guzman said. “If we have to go to Shiloh, we don’t miss a beat.”

Fuentes also threw a touchdown pass to Julio Avalos, while Damean Schuman returned an onside kick for a touchdown.

Melia finished with two touchdown passes for Taft, and Prince Williams added a 74-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, but the Toreadors couldn’t keep pace with Cleveland’s explosive offense.

“We had to get back to the basics of our brand of football,” Guzman said. “That was kind of the theme of this week. Remember who we are and what got us at this point.”
