Three other children – ages 8, 7 and 4 – were also injured in the collision. They were treated and released from area hospitals, said Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Brooks Jarosz.
The 11-year-old girl was pronounced dead just after 5 p.m. on May 1, according to Jarosz. The county Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office will release her identity once it is confirmed and her next of kin is notified.
The crash happened around 6:15 p.m. on April 27 near Foothill and Stevens Creek boulevards.
The driver of a silver Mazda pickup truck collided with another vehicle and hit a power pole. The four children, who were on the sidewalk at the time, were also struck.
The driver – identified as a 38-year-old Cupertino man – was arrested and booked into county jail on charges of driving under the influence of drugs causing seriously bodily injury.
The sheriff’s office is awaiting the suspect’s toxicology report, according to Jarosz.
“Once the investigation is complete, the information will be sent to the District Attorney’s Office for review,” Jarosz said.
Anyone with information related to the case can contact the sheriff’s office Traffic Investigative Division at 408-868-6600, or the anonymous tip line at 408-808-4431.
