Cyclist critically injured by semi on Southwest Side in 4th hit-and-run this week

A bicyclist was critically hurt when a semi hit him Friday morning on the Southwest Side, marking at least the fourth hit-and-run crash this week, two of which have been fatal.

Around 6:50 a.m., the 37-year-old bicyclist was riding north in the 6400 block of South Kedzie Avenue when he tried to turn left and was struck by a semi-truck going south on Kedzie Avenue, Chicago police said.

The cyclist suffered a head injury and he was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he was in critical condition, police said.

The truck driver did not stop.

Friday morning’s hit-and-run is at least the third such incident to happen citywide this week.

Around 11 p.m. Thursday, a man was was standing in the 8700 block of South Ashland Avenue when a beige car hit him and left the scene. He was taken to Christ where he died, police said.

On Tuesday night, a 53-year-old man was changing a tire on an SUV in the 6800 block of South Pulaski Road when an orange Honda SUV northbound on Pulaski slammed into him and left the scene. He was also taken to Christ and was pronounced dead.

On Monday, a 45-year-old woman was critically hurt in the Humboldt Park neighborhood when a maroon-colored vehicle hit her and fled the scene in the 3100 block of West Franklin Boulevard, police said.

No arrests have been made.

The Chicago police’s Major Accidents Investigation Unit was probing the crashes.
