The collision happened Friday in the 45000 block of Fremont Boulevard about 11:30 p.m. Police said the vehicle involved in it later crashed into a traffic pole about a quarter-mile away, injuring its driver.
In a statement, Fremont police said they arrested a 58-year-old Sunnyvale man on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of an alcoholic beverage causing injury.
The pedestrian had major injuries when police and rescue personnel arrived. According to police, rescuers tried CPR and an automated external defibrillator, but the victim died at the scene.
Authorities have not identified the victim, pending notification of relatives.
The crash was the first fatal one this year that Fremont police have investigated.
The suspect went to a hospital and had what police called minor injuries. He remained in custody at Alameda County Jail on Tuesday afternoon in lieu of $150,000 bail.
