The hailstorm hit in the city of Yiwu in Zhejiang Province on Monday.

It barraged vehicles with large hailstones measuring up to two inches.

The local weather office had issued a red alert – the highest level in its colour-coded warning system.

Residents recorded the incident as cars were pelted by hail.

It is likely the storm will be as several cars were damaged.

Local reports estimated that the insurance companies will have to pay more than £10,000,000 to car owners.

Usual March weather in Yiwu, a city with almost 2,000,000 inhabitants, similar to the UK that time of the year.

The daily mean temperature is around 11.9 Celsius in Yiwu, rising to 17.8 Celsius in April, according to China Meteorological Administration.
