Election Day ‘glitch’ leads to long lines, ballot issues at Chicago voting sites

Election Day in Chicago did not go completely smooth for some voters at multiple polling sites on Tuesday.

One of the two precincts at Holstein Park reportedly had been without paper ballots for hours Tuesday evening and had only one voting machine, creating a long line, a Chicago Sun-Times reporter observed.

The Chicago Board of Elections said it provided ballots and touch-screen voting machines at Holstein Park, 1st Ward and District 4 sites that were affected, according to board representative Julie Metea.

She explained the cause was related to split precincts with multiple ballot combinations.

“The issue appeared to be in those split precincts where there are several different ballot combinations and styles because maybe one half of the precinct’s voting on one congressional district, another one’s voting on another one. So they may have as many as seven ballot combinations,” said Metea.

Metea indicated election board officials did not know how many other voting sites or precincts might have been affected, she said.

“We want to apologize to voters who came out and encountered a glitch,” Metea said. “Their votes are important. We value their time, and we apologize for the inconvenience as we’re investigating and fulfilling the ballot need.”
