Firework malfunction at Angel City soccer game sends pyrotechnics towards stands

A firework malfunction after a women’s professional soccer game in Los Angeles sent some fireworks towards the crowd at BMO Stadium on Friday, July 3.

The incident occurred during a post-match fireworks celebration to celebrate Angel City FC’s 2-0 win against Orlando Pride on Friday.

Video posted to social media showed several fireworks shooting into the air, while others were launched sideways into seating areas at the stadium, where the crowd reacted and some ducked behind seats.

“A fireworks malfunction occurred during last night’s post-match celebration at BMO Stadium,” said Angel City FC spokesperson Stephanie Rudnick. “Our medical and safety teams were on site and ready to respond. Stadium operations confirmed the venue was secure and guests, staff, players, and crew were able to depart safely.”

There were no injuries reported.

The team is working with its pyrotechnics vendor to review what happened and appropriate next steps, Rudnick said.
