At least five people have died after an inferno broke out at a fairground in Mexico.

Hundreds of people were enjoying a fair in the southeastern Mexican city of Villahermosa today when the event turned into a deadly nightmare.

Footage shows a wall of orange flames and thick black smoke raging above the fairground at a warehouse.

Hundreds of people fled the blaze, but not everyone managed to escape to safety.

The governor of Tabasco Javier May Rodríguez said that the fire broke out in the early hours of the morning in Warehouse 1 at Tabasco Park.

He confirmed that five people were killed before the flames were brought under control.

An investigation has been launched into the tragedy.

Mr Rodríguez said in a post in Spanish on X: ‘During these regrettable events, five people lost their lives, so we extend our condolences to their families and offer our full support in the wake of this unfortunate incident.

‘We are deeply grateful to the public who helped evacuate the area when the disaster struck.

‘We will immediately launch an economic recovery program for the exhibitors who were affected. We will not leave them alone.

‘The investigative authorities will begin their work to determine the causes of the fire. We will be providing updates throughout the morning on what happened and the course the Fair will take. Together, we will move forward.
