Food delivery driver sought after Amazon worker gunned down in Matteson facility parking lot: police say

Authorities are seeking a food delivery driver who became embroiled in an argument with a worker for a third-party vendor at Amazon and fatally shot the 26-year-old worker late Sunday in south suburban Matteson, police said.

The worker, who has not been identified, is from south suburban Glenwood, police said.

Police responded to a call of shots fired at about 10:55 p.m.in an employee parking lot outside 7001 S. Vollmer Rd., an Amazon fulfillment center that is open 24-hours, police said in a statement.

Officers arrived within approximately three minutes and found an employee suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the torso near the building’s front entrance police said.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim and the suspect shooter — who was a food delivery driver — had an argument that turned into a minor physical altercation, during which the driver shot the victim several times, police said.

Officers immediately rendered aid by applying a tourniquet and performing CPR until paramedics arrived but the victim was taken by ambulance to St. James Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police and the medical examiner’s office said. An autopsy is scheduled.

The entire incident took place outside the facility and police spoke to witnesses and reviewed surveillance footage leading up to the shooting but a description of the attacker was not given.

Matteson police continue to investigate the incident and will work with South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force to identify and eventually charge the alleged shooter, who is not in custody, according to police.

“This is an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public,” police said in the statement.

Anyone who has information relating to this investigation is encouraged to call the Matteson Police Department through their non-emergency line at 708-503-3130 or submit tips through the Village’s website via Tip411.

Jesus Garcia, an Amazon spokesperson, reacted to the attack.

“We’re saddened by this senseless act of violence and are focused on supporting our employees and the victim’s family during this difficult time,” Garcia said in the statement. “We’re working with the Matteson Police Department in their active investigation.”

According to Garcia, the victim was not an employee of Amazon, though he was working there as an employee for a third-party vendor.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
