Free agent defensive end Marcus Davenport, a former first-round draft pick, visited the Bears. For a team that added no relevant pass rushers this offseason, Davenport represents a big name. Still, he has just four sacks in the past four seasons after posting nine in 2021.
Davenport knows the Bears, and vice versa — he played for defensive coordinator Dennis Allen with the Saints from 2018-22. After a year with the Vikings, he played two seasons with the Lions. Bears head coach Ben Johnson worked on the Lions staff in 2024. He started seven games for the Lions last year but wasn’t particularly effective — Pro Football Focus ranked him 103rd out of 115 qualified edge rushers.
The Saints drafted him 14th overall in 2018.
The Bears got some good news at defensive end — Montez Sweat returned to practice Sunday for the first time since he left Aug. 6. Johnson said Saturday he expected him back soon.
