Hazmat response to leaking trailer shuts down 605 Freeway in South El Monte

An unknown substance leaking from a trailer prompted the shutdown of a stretch of the 605 Freeway Friday in South El Monte.

About 9:45 a.m. Friday, the California Highway Patrol was advised of the leak on the southbound side of the freeway just north of the 60 Freeway.

Officers determined the incident involved a hazardous material and initially shut down one, then two lanes of the freeway — but as of about 1:30 p.m., all lanes of the freeway were shut down in both directions, according to the CHP.

“CHP officers and additional personnel are on scene working diligently to open the roadway as soon as possible,” according to CHP Officer Aaron Zamarron.

Zamarron encouraged anyone commuting through the area to consider the 10, 60, 5 and 710 freeways as alternative routes.
